The Voice of Heaven

Today we read 2 Samuel 6, 1 Chronicles 13, Psalm 68 & Matthew 17.

There have been few events in history that stack up higher than the Transfiguration.  It is a tough event to understand completely, but it is worth the time and effort.  Some things I notice each and every time:
1) Jesus met with Moses and Elijah.  Not only does that affirm the reality of the afterlife, but it also speaks of a greater fulfillment that Christ was carrying out.  Moses represents the Law.  Elijah represents the prophets.  'The law and the prophets' is a term that speaks of the entire Old Testament.  This is a powerful message that Jesus is the fulfillment of the laws and the prophecies of everything that came before Him.
2) I also recognize that Peter, James, and John recognized Moses and Elijah.  Have you ever thought about how they recognized them?  They did not have pictures of them.  They did not have paintings of them.  They did not have children's Bibles with drawings in them.  They simply knew who they were.  That tells me something about heaven.  Not only will I know my loved ones in heaven, there will be a much greater recognition of others in heaven as well; even those that I have never met.
3) I also recognize the message or the purpose.  What a great affirmation of what God was doing through Christ!  Christ heard all of God's history speak to Him and his inner circle witnessed the whole event.
4) The message they left with was the key point, however.   It is stated in Matthew 17.5- He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”  The key point: Listen to Him!  Not only do we need to hear Him, we need to heed His Words, obey His Words, and live by His Words.

It is a timeless and true message that we must live by.  All of heaven echoes it into our being.

K.C. and the SONshine Boy

Today we read 2 Samuel 4 &5, Psalm 139, and Matthew 16.

After a lot of rain, a missed flight, and another delayed one, I made my arrival in Kansas City about 1 AM.  Atlanta airport is a sight to see when everybody is running late and planes are not working right.  However, I wake up this morning a little later but overlooking the city and thankful for the sunshine.

I also wake up to read one of the most introspective passages that we have the opportunity to read.  Jesus asked the question in Matthew 16.26  -For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
I think about that from two angles this morning.
The first is the most obvious: a person ought to invest his/her life in Christ and seek Him, instead of the things of the world.
However, I also think about the Christian who has invested his/her life in Christ.  Should we merely profit eternally by burying the treasure that God has given us in Christ?  Or should we profit daily by enjoying the investment by sharing it, soaking it up, and living in response to it?

Let's Chose the Latter and live in the Son!

A Heart for the King

Today we read 2 Samuel 3, 1 Chronicles 12, and Matthew 15.

Today we read in 1 Chronicles 12 of the mighty men that were willing to do whatever it took for King David.  All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a single mind to make David king. (v.38)

May it be said about us that we come to the Lord with a whole heart to make Him king over all of our lives.  May we be single minded to make Him King.

Let's Celebrate the King today! I look forward to worshiping with you today if you live in the Houston, MS area.  If not, worship today wholeheartedly in your place of worship.

Alone to Pray

Today we read 2 Samuel 2, 1 Chronicles 11, Psalm 142, and Matthew 14.

This verse that I hang my hat on today seems to be a transitional verse, but it really is a verse that can make a transitional difference in your life.  Matthew 14.23-And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

The Saturday Simple Thought is this: If Jesus needed time alone with God to pray, so do you and I. Let's let nothing come in the way of our most valuable time...time alone with the Father.

Get it early today before its gone!

The Nitty Gritty

Today we read 2 Samuel 1, Psalm 140, and Matthew 13.

The seed is the Word of God and you never have to worry about it: when the seed is scattered around you and in you, it is what you need.  God's Word is always timely.  People often say, "Preacher, that is what I needed to hear." or "You stepped all over my toes."  No, I didn't.  I have no clue what is going on in the heart and life of individuals (well, maybe a clue, based on their lives), and I don't write sermons or preach to aim at folks.  If you got a Word, you didn't get it from me.   What you have experienced is the synergy of the Holy Spirit, a receptive heart, and an obedient mail carrier...or seed broadcaster...or bread toter.

The real question is not the soundness of the message of God's Word, but the state of the heart and mind of the listener.  Jesus compared it to soil.  He said some hearts are as hard as a well-worn path.  They may look like they are listening for a time, but, the reality is, they are shelled up and not receptive.  Other folks are shallow.  They seem to take it in but, in reality, they are Roman Candle Christians.   They start out with a lot of pop and sizzle, look beautiful for a few minutes, but burn out quickly. There are also those who have lives that are so cluttered that they don't slow down long enough to take it in.  That message is lost as well.  The heart and the mind that are open, ready, and waiting are the ones that God's Word really makes a difference in.  Jesus put it this way in   Matthew 13.23-  As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

There is a direct correlation in how much the Word will make a difference in your life, how spiritually fruitful you will be, and the state of receptivity of your heart and life.

That is getting it right down to the nitty gritty and that is appropriate because that is what makes the difference.  I pray that you are open today to what the Lord has for you.

The Heart of the Matter

Today we read 1 Samuel 30 & 31, 1 Chronicles 10, & Matthew 12.

Your heart is overflowing...it really is.  What is in your heart, what fills you up, what you concentrate on will come out.  Your heart will overflow.  The question is: What it is your heart?  Do you know where the spout of the heart is.  In Matthew 12.34 Jesus tells us-  For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

If your mouth doesn't work right or if it is does not seem to say the right things, check your heart.  If you can get to the heart of the matter, the mouth will fix itself.

I hope you have a good day of examining the heart and making sure the heart is right with the Lord.  You will say things that are a lot prettier and more positive when it is.

A Note to the Worn Out

Today we read 1 Samuel 28 & 29, Psalm 109, and Matthew 11.

Better than any hotel, more comforting than the Cracker Barrel, when you are weary and worn, I know where you can find rest.
Jesus said in Matthew 11.28- Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
This world can be like a rat race:  When will we ever get off the spinning wheel??
I am thankful that when we bring those woes and worries to Christ, we find comfort.  When we bring ourselves in our tired states to Him, He will give us rest.

I pray that you rest your worries in the Lord today.

Like My Mother Said...

Today we read 1 Samuel 27, Psalm 141, 1 Chronicles 9, and Matthew 10.

My mother always told me that my mouth was going to get me in trouble.  It often has.

I tell my daughters that their mouths are going to get them in trouble.  It often does.

The Lord warns us today to keep a damper on our mouths, by allowing us to hear the cry of the Psalmist in  Psalm 141.3- Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips!

Oh, be careful little mouths what you say today!  Let's please the Lord and others with the words that we say today!

Our day will be more blessed if we do.

Cotton Pickin' Fields

Today we read 1 Samuel 25 & 26, Psalm 63, and Matthew 9.

There is not a cotton field ready for the pickin' that I pass that I don't think about Matthew 9.36-38- When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

As evident as it is that a cotton field is ready to be harvested, it is just as evident that we live in fields ripe for the harvest. The question is 'Who will do the labor?'  The labor is living for the Lord, having compassion on a desperate, searching world, taking time for the harrassed, watching out for the helpless, and pointing lost sheep to the shepherd.

Let's pray and let's go!  Let's trust that the same Jesus that touched and changed the lives of those that came in contact with Him will still do the same today!  Search the fields and have a great day!

That Sort of Man

Today we read 1 Samuel 24, Psalms 57 & 58, 1 Chronicles 8, and Matthew 8.

When Jesus did a natural miracle among them, they were amazed and recognized Him as amazing.
Matthew 8.37- And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

I'll tell you what sort of man He is: the sort of man we worship today.  If you are near Houston, MS, worship Him with us today at FBC. If you are not, worship Him in your place of worship.

Have a great day in the Lord!

I Am Glad

Today we read 1 Samuel 23, Psalms 31 & 64, and Matthew 7.

I have had a wonderful and blessed week and now I am home and I am glad.

I am glad I got to spend some time with my parents.  I made a detour during the week and spent the night and a couple of meals with my Mom and Dad.  Always a gift of God and I am glad that it worked out.

I am glad that there is a place in the Tennessee hills that is a sanctuary for me and a few other pastors.  Sleep experts talk about preparing your place for sleep.  Study experts talk about preparing your place for study.  Well, Whitestone is a place set aside by God and us (the few pastors) to get away, ponder, discuss, pray, fellowship, and grow.  I am glad we have such a place.

I am glad that I have those guys as friends.  We are as different as night and day. We have three things in common: the Lord Jesus, the call into ministry, and a friend named Ken Smith.  However, as iron sharpens iron, we sharpen one another...really the Lord sharpens us through each other.

I am glad that they are all just normal guys.  I come home refreshed that others have 'stuff" that they deal with: heartache, valleys, pressure, great times followed by not-so-great, visions, and hopes- ongoing stuff that God is working on in us and the people we love and serve.

I come home refreshed by friends, by fellowship, and, now that I am with them again, by family.

I am glad that I serve a risen Savior who is in the world today!  I am going to follow the advice of the Psalmist.
Psalm 31.23-24-  Love the Lord, all you his saints!
The Lord preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.
24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!

I will give Him praise today... I encourage you to do the same...Have a blessed day!

No Worry

Today we read 1 Samuel 22, Psalms 17 & 35, and Matthew 6.

Some folks have a bad tendency to worry about things.  It is almost as if they look for something to worry about it.  It is an occupation...a hobby...something that keeps them busy.  Never can such enjoy  the good that is happening, because it is bound to change and turn bad.  Never do they appear to enjoy the blessing, they don't have room to absorb it because they are too filled with worry.  You just want to say, "Relax!"  You could almost enjoy watching someone that could turn everything to a point of worry, but it is not a light matter.

The reality is that all of us worry.  Yes, some are consumed with it, but all of us have our points.  There are different things that worry different people, but we all have our areas of worry.  You know and I know that worrying does not help, but we just can't help it sometimes.

Well, let's do something about it today!  It may only last a day, but let's get today right and then we will 'worry' about tomorrow when we get there...or will we?
Jesus said in Matthew 6.34- Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Today, we will give all of our concerns and worries to The Lord.  Everything in this day and in our tomorrows are in His Hands, so today, let's let Him keep them.

I pray that it will make your day easier.  Have a blessed one!

Shine Today!

Today we read 1 Samuel 20 & 21, Psalm 34, and Matthew 5.

I saw a button on someone that read: I Am Allergic To Negative People.  AMEN!  In Christ we have so much to be positive about, let's not be negative.  We have the Lord to give praise to, a life to please Him with, and a lost and dying world that desperately needs a fresh touch of Christ in and through our lives.  Hide it on a bushel, NO!, I am going to let it...Him...shine through me!

Notice what else Christ said today in Matthew 5.16- In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

You already knew that, but all of us need to be reminded.  Let's shine for Him today!

From the Start

Today we read 1 Samuel 19, 1 Chronicles 7, Psalm 59, and Matthew 4.

I am blessed this week to be in the hills of Tennessee and I wake up each morning to a view that overlooks the Watts Bar Lake off the Tennessee River.   The sun has not peeked out yet, but when it does and the fog burns off, it will make for yet another beautiful scene today.  I will have breakfast with friends and then worship in the chapel here at Whitestone.  It is a blessed opportunity and one that I am extremely grateful for.

With all of those thoughts I read the following passage this morning and God just drove it to the point for me:  Psalm 59.16- But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.  For you have been to me a fortress  and a refuge in the day of my distress.

Whether today is a day away for nurture or your rat race schedule is about to begin, know today where your strength is and celebrate it.  Tell Him about it!  Sing praise to Him!  Whatever you face (and  I know a lot of you are facing a bunch), know where you can find refuge.  Know, acknowledge, and praise the One that will build spiritual, fortress walls around your heart and guide you through your valleys.

Start your day by singing praise to Him and have a blessed day!

To His Face

Today we read 1 Samuel 18, 1 Chronicles 6, Psalm 11, and Matthew 3.

I am not sure when it started.  We guessed it was 2003 last night.  For several years I have had the opportunity to spend a week in April in Tennessee with some other pastors in a conference led by Ken Smith.   A long time ago a friend told Ken- You need to leave more than a bunch of old sermons laying around when you are gone.  You need to find a way to invest what you know in others.   Out of that conversation our time together started.    We read a few books before we come and talk about those.  We discuss different ministry ideas, circumstances that we are facing, and maybe a devotional word or two.  However, honestly, the greatest thrill for this week is the laughs, the cries, and the sharing of the journey.  I will find out this week that this year has been triumphal for some of these guys...dismal for others.  I don't know that yet.  I will learn it later though.  They rag me and I rag them.  Last night they were calling me 'beanpole'.  That hits a lot softer now than it did when I was in high school.  I am not a beanpole but I have lost over 50 lbs. since they have seen last (or since that pic on this blog was taken).  Ken also informed me that they expect a Von Trapp concert--one more shot at Edelweiss, I guess.

I share all this because I want to take the time to thank my church family for the opportunity.  It is a time of fresh renewal.  No, I won't come back preaching any better, but I will come back a little stronger.  You have allowed me every spring to carve out this week and I appreciate it.

I also share this because I want to thank my family.  The world does not slow down when I am gone. There is another full week in the Heeringa family but I am missing it.  Thank you, Dawn and the girls for this opportunity.

I actually made a detour on the way up to spend the night with my parents as well and enjoy a couple of meals with them.  What a gift of God!
I am blessed and I fully acknowledge that it is not me, but Him... and them...and you.  Thanks!

Today God burned this verse in my heart as my verse of the day.
Psalm 11.7- For the Lord is righteous;  he loves righteous deeds;  the upright shall behold his face.
Let's look to His Face today and live like we do!

Today's Battle

Today we read 1 Samuel 17, Psalm 9, and Matthew 2.

Are you facing a battle?  Are you dreading one?  In the middle of one?  Do the giants of your life seem larger than life? I am thankful that we do not have to face the stuff of life alone.  Not only is God with us during the struggles, He will fight the battle for us.  As David told Goliath before God took over and ended the standoff:   1 Samuel 17.47b- For the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hand. (www.lifejournal.cc)

Do not let the enemy stand in your valley and scare the woolies out of you today.  You are not alone. God is with you.  He will fight for you.  He bring you victory.

Trust the Lord today in your battle.

To Obey Is Better

Today we read 1 Samuel 15 &16, I Chronicles 5, and Matthew 1.

Do you know the most valuable thing that you have and that you can give to God?  It is not your money.  It is not your intellect.  It is not your interests.  It is not your time.  It is not your heart.
1 Samuel 15.22b- Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.
It is your obedience...
....and when you give God your obedience by listening to Him, you will give Him all those other things as well.

Give God place today and you will be surprised the difference that it makes.

A Great Day!

Today we read 1 Samuel 14, 1 Chronicles 4, and 2 Corinthians 13.

Good advice for your Saturday can be found in 2 Corinthians 13.11- Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

No tearing down today...let's build up!  No disagreeing today...let's get along!  No raucous today...let's live in peace!  We will have a much greater sense of His Presence if we will follow the words of Scripture.

Have a great day and make it great for others.

The Pacer

Today we read 1 Samuel 13, 1 Chronicles 2 & 3, & 2 Corinthians 12.

In 1 Samuel 13 we read about when Saul took a shortcut.   He was to wait for Samuel to call upon the Lord on behalf of the army, but when Samuel took longer than Saul wanted him to, Saul took it into his own hands.  What is the significance of that? He did not do what the Lord had led him to do.  He did not follow the Lord's lead.  He did not ignore the Lord, but he also did not obey Him.  It cost him dearly.  Vs. 13-14 explain the costs- And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

In his headstrong ways, Saul did what he wanted to do, instead of waiting on The Lord.  He is not the only one that has done anything like that.  I am not casting stones anymore than 'fessing up.'  However, there are times, and we have a hard time distinguishing when they are, that are headstrong, cold heart, stubborn ways that do not wait on the Lord will cost us dearly. We will be much better off just waiting on the Lord.

Don't try to get ahead of God's pace today.  He will lead you at the pace you need to go.  Follow God!

Waiting or Pondering

Today we read I Samuel 11 &12, I Chronicles 1, & 2 Corinthians 11.

I Samuel 12.6- Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.

Last night when I went to bed there was talk of a storm.  Early in the week they talked of tornadoes.  Last night they spoke of large hail and strong winds.  I woke up early and went out and all was peaceful.  I knew it was coming.  I still know it is coming.  I have seen the radar.  We will have a rainy morning.   It could be stormy.  People dread the storms.  Rain is not bad, but the storms....who wants the storms?

It reminds me of life.  There is a storm looming.  No, I don't have a radar and I don't know what it is.  There are some things I dread.  I don't like loss.  I don't like sickness.  I don't like difficulty.  However, all are coming...at some point and in some way.  What do you do?  Do you just brace for it?  I don't think you can.  If you always live in fear of the storms, you will never enjoy the sun....or the Son.  Let's listen to Samuel this morning and only fear God, seek to serve Him faithfully, and ponder on all He has done for us.

There is a lot worse than a little wind and rain. I am going to focus today on what is a lot better.

Ball It Up

Today we read I Samuel 8,9, &10 and 2 Corinthians 10.

It is so easy for us to be swayed by the perspectives, ideas, temptations, and oversights of the world in which we live.  We must be careful to allow the Lord to transform our mind by the washing of His Word instead of conforming to this world.  Paul put it this way in 2 Corinthians 10.5-6- We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

Your thoughts will get away with you if you do not take them captive.  When I was a child we went through a couple of hamsters along the way.  We had a clear plastic ball that we would put a hamster in and let it run all over the house.  However, if you let a hamster out to run without containing it, there is a lot of places to lose a hamster in a house...especially one that has a dog.  Even when the hamster was loose, we had to make sure that we had taken it captive for its own protection.

Our thoughts are a lot like those hamsters. You better not let your thoughts run loose.  A daily dose of God's Word will help you keep a Godly perspective on matters in the midst of a world full of downward sloping opinions and a TV full of worldly talking heads.    A daily dose of God's Word will be a great check point for wandering thoughts that seperate us from God,  or that lead us in unhealthy directions, and, when left untap, often lead to moral collapse.  We are in a war, folks, and one that we cannot see.  We cannot see it, because it is bigger than us.  The evidence of such a battle is all around us, however, and we do not need to fall victim to it.   Protect your heart and mind from the filth and misdirection of the world in which we live.

Take every one of your thoughts and make them captive for the Lord.   That is the way we can thrive.

Scattered and Smiling

Today we read I Samuel 6 & 7, Psalm 72, and 2 Corinthians 9.

Let's not spar a seed today.  Let's scatter them as we go.  2 Corinthians 9.6-8-The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

Can you imagine the impact that Christians will make when they take what God has stored up in them and take what God has given to them and scatter it around cheerfully like a new, young, anticipating farmer with a hand broadcaster?  There might be big and wonderful things blooming all around us.  Let's take God at His Word today and sow bountifully with cheer and joy in our heart.

People won't know what to think!  It will fun to see their response...especially in the days when that seed starts budding out.

Happy Farming Today!!

Thrive to Excel!

Today we read 1 Samuel 3, 4, & 5, Psalm 77, and 2 Corinthians 8.

In 2 Corinthians 8.7 Paul challenges us: But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also.

In the things that matter, let's not just try to get by.  Let's excel at what we do.  Someone who loves baseball will not be satisfied hitting the ball 20% of the time or catching the ball 90% of the time.  He will excel to get a hit twice that much and catch the ball everytime.  A running back in football doesn't strive to hold on to the ball most of the time...he wants to never fumble.  A straight A student does not want a B.  An on-time worker never wants to be late.  A cook never wants to burn a meal.   When it comes to our Christian walk, let's not give a halfhearted effort.  Let's thrive to excel in all of our ways for The Lord.

Remember: a batter sometimes strikes out, a running back sometimes fumbles, B's come to good students, people run late, and some things  baked don't come out right, so we won't always get it right either.  However, we will not be satisfied with that.  Let's thrive to excel today!

Thermostats or Thermometers?

Today we read I Samuel 1 & 2, Psalm 66, 2 Corinthians 7.

I Samuel 2.26 tells us what Samuel was doing in the world. Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man. The verses before that tell us that the world was not much like Samuel.  In the midst of a wicked world he was different.  He continued to grow in favor with the Lord in the midst of a wicked world.  In John 17 Jesus prayed not that God would take us out of the wicked world, but that we would stand up in the midst of it.  We need to take those words seriously.

Let's not be thermometers that simply take the temperature of society and move our mercury to match.  Let's instead be thermostats that set the temp and change our climate.

Make a difference in your world today!

Simple Saturday

Today we read Ruth 3&4, Psalms 64 & 65, and 2 Corinthians 6.

Let's make it a simple Saturday.

Psalm 64.10- Let the righteous one rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him!
Let all the upright in heart exult!

Praise The Lord today and rest in Him....no matter what you are doing!!!

Trusting and Listening

Today we read Ruth 1 & 2, Psalms 53 & 61, and 2 Corinthians 5.

Don't be afraid today of what you cannot see.  Be reminded: He is at work in you and around you.
2 Corinthians 5.6-7- So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.
When you trust what you cannot see, you will hear what, too often, we don't listen to.  I pray today that you walk by faith and listen to the still, small voice of a loving, guiding Holy Spirit, instead of the raging volume of the world around you.

Have a blessed Friday!

A Daily Dose

Today we read Judges 19-21 and 2 Corinthians 4.

Life will wear you down and out with the daily struggles that hit.  Although each one of us walk a unique path and have individual circumstances, all of us, even those that hide it well, have our share of woes and struggles.  It is easy to get weary along the way.  No energy drink will fix it.  No vitamin supplement will give you what you need.  No exercise program will strengthen you for the course.  No, Wheaties won't even do it.  You need a daily dose of the Lord and His Word. Paul put it this way- 2 Corinthians 4.16- So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

Don't just read what I write.  Don't just read a devotional.  Read God's Word after asking Him to allow His Holy Spirit to give you insights for your day.  You will be glad you did.

Be renewed today.

Unveiled and Open

Today we read Judges 17 & 18, Psalm 89, and 2 Corinthians 3.

Paul often explains the salvation that we can have in the Lord like a mystery.  The word that is used for mystery, also means a secret.  He explains the power and the difference that comes with salvation as a secret mystery.  It is not that he encourages us not to share, but, instead, he is saying that one cannot fully grasp all that it means to be saved until he/she has actually received the Lord.  No matter how hard we try to explain all that you have in God through Christ, one cannot fully grasp it until you know Him personally.

Those of the Old Testament received their salvation by looking to the God who would provide a Savior to them in the future. It was Christ who paid their price for salvation, the price was just paid after the fact.  We, on the other hand, have the hope of salvation by looking back to the  cross.  That is to our advantage.  We can read the story of Jesus and be strengthened by it.  We also have the powerful difference of the indwelling Spirit of God that came at Pentecost after the ascension of Christ as is recorded in Acts 2.  The combination of the complete Word of God with the Gospels of Jesus and the personal empowerment of the Holy Spirit make things much different for us today than those of old.

The plan of God has now been revealed.  We look back to the cross of Christ for our salvation and ahead to His Return for the completion of His Plan.  Paul put it this way in
2 Corinthians 3.16-18- But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,  are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Today, I want to encourage you to ponder on all that you have when you have Jesus, and live today seizing every opportunity to behold all of God's glory.  He is with you, truly loves you, and wants you to experience the power of His presence in all your life.  Enjoy the opportunity.

Sweet Smelling

Today we read the story of Samson in Judges 13-16 and 2 Corinthians 2.

A sweet smell is mighty pleasant.  Whether it is my wife's perfume, the smell of a ham baking, or the robust mixture of spring flowers in a beautiful garden, a sweet smell is a nice refreshment.  We are to smell sweet in our presentation as well.  2 Corinthians 2.14- But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.

We are victorious in Christ.  Let us present ourselves in a Godly and kind manner.  Let's be as pleasant as a good smelling fragrance....a home baked ham...a dozen of roses...by simply spreading the kindness of the love of the Gospel wherever we go.

I hope your day ain't stinkin'!  Smell sweet today!

Never Alone

Today I begin again to write from my personal devotional time following the Life Journal Bible reading that I found in the book The Divine Mentor and that I have used since 2008. Today we read Judges 11,12, Psalm 50, and 2 Corinthians 1.   Of those passages God pointed out the following verses:
2 Corinthians 1.3-4-Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

It is a great comfort for me to know that I will not go through the distressing times that I may face in this life alone.  God will be with me.  He will give me comfort beyond measure.  He will give me peace that passes understanding.  He will not leave me alone.  He will come to me.    He is so faithful at it that He expects us to not only be comforted, but also to comfort others from the experience that we have walked through with the Lord.  Therefore, the opportunity is twofold.  First, you will never be alone.  He will comfort you.  Second, He will empower you to comfort others.

What was it that you said you were scared of?  What were you thinking? He is with you.  Experience it, grow from it, and share it.
