I Samuel 2.26 tells us what Samuel was doing in the world. Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man. The verses before that tell us that the world was not much like Samuel. In the midst of a wicked world he was different. He continued to grow in favor with the Lord in the midst of a wicked world. In John 17 Jesus prayed not that God would take us out of the wicked world, but that we would stand up in the midst of it. We need to take those words seriously.
Let's not be thermometers that simply take the temperature of society and move our mercury to match. Let's instead be thermostats that set the temp and change our climate.
