Ready

Well, it is the last day of the year.  I remember when 2011 was futuristic talk.  Still feels that way at times.  Now, we'll be writing 2012 on our checks tomorrow. Boy, time flies.  Tomorrow I plan to preach on the subject of 2012.  Much has been made of that year.  Much is expected...or at least, wondered about.  Much will happen.  How do you prepare for 2012 on the last day of 2011?  You keep it all in perspective.  Rev. 22:20 grasps it well- He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! (www.lifejournal.cc)
I don't know when and I don't know HOW soon but I know He is coming and I know He says it is soon.
Of course, Scripture also tells us that a 1000 years is like a day to the Lord.  Based upon that, we'll let Him determine how soon.  However, I also echo what John added. -  Amen!  Come, Lord Jesus!  I'm ready!  Are you?  Do you know if there has been a time in your life when you have confessed your sin to the Lord and acknowledged your need for Him?
Has there been a time when you have truly surrendered your life to Him and His Will and committed to follow Him?
If so, there has been a spiritual transfusion that has taken place.  The Holy Spirit is now in you and empowers you to succeed spiritually in all your life...if you will lean on Him, follow His direction, let Him guide your path.  Not only that, you are promised a heavenly home with the Lord.  It is not make believe.  It is talked about again and again in Scripture.
If you haven't surrendered your life to the Lord, just do it!   It will the greatest decision that you make in your life and it will forever change you.  What better way to start a new year than to give your heart and life to Christ and be a born again believer.  It is my prayer for you!
If you are a Christian, close out this year thanking God, committing to the Lord, and walking into a new year fresh and clean before Him!  Happy New Year!  Hope to see the locals at 11 AM tomorrow!

Making It Right

Enough with the wickedness!  As we read through Revelation at a lightning round pace, we begin to see the culmination of evil (www.lifejournal.cc).  It comes through the bowls of God's wrath and they favor the plagues upon Egypt quite a bit, but not completely.  The profound message that I see as the bowls of wrath are 'dished' out is the response of the wicked.   In Rev. 16:9 it says- They did not repent and give him glory. Verse 11 of the same chapter says they did not repent of their deeds.  In verse 14 they assemble for war against God.  In verse 21 they curse God.  It then goes on to show the wicked city and its destruction.
How is all this relative?  Well, how many lives are ruined when they did not heed the warning that was layed out for them?  So many times people know what they are to do, but won't do it.  So many times people are warned that they need to change, but they refuse to.  Hardening your heart toward God in your sin or becoming callous to God's people who strive to help 'spur' you along leads to, at least, a lot of unhappiness.
Maybe you are not cursing God or attempting to assemble for war against Him (or maybe you are), but you might be failing to pay attention to some sin in your life that needs correction.  God has warned you through the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit or through the judgment that comes to the wicked in Scripture.  If you will not stop a sin pattern in your life, you are refusing to repent, just as we read about this morning.  What a horrible way to go into to a new year!
If there is unconfessed sin, or recessive sin that dogs you daily, or sneaky sin that you too often ignore, repent today and make it right. God takes it serious.  We should too.
I pray you will be refreshed and strong when you do!  Have a great day!

Victory In Christ

We are reading huge chunks of Revelation this time around (www.lifejournal.cc).  It is a lot to take in but in some ways you understand the book better by reading it like that.   Today we have a true sense of the war that takes place between good and evil, or the demons and the angels, or the redeemed and the world. It is a battle.  At times it speaks of a previous fight.  At times it speaks of a current battle.  At times it speaks of the future struggles that will end when victory is finally consummated in the end.  In the meantime notice the struggle that is now taking place and why it is taking place.
Revelation 12:17- Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea.   It is a war and it is guerilla warfare.  Sometimes the enemy is camouflaged in the world.  Sometimes morality sits on a slippery slope.   Sometimes we are seduced by the sweet whispers of the evil one in our ear.  It is a sneaky thing.  However, the dragon's (or Satan's) efforts are to keep us from knowing the Lord (if we are not yet Christians) or enjoying the joy of our salvation (if we are Christians).  If he can steal you of your thrill, kill your zeal, or destroy your joy, he will succeed in keeping you from sharing your faith.  By not sharing your faith, he wins victory in the lives of others.  It is dirty pool.
So what do you we do?  We realize the battle that we are in and we determine to live our life enjoying the victory that we have in Christ by keeping our eyes on Him.  Don't watch the enemy and his tactics in order to gain victory.  Watch Christ and follow where He leads.
And do it today and win the battle we  face today!

All to Him

We close out this year together looking at the book of Revelation (www.lifejournal.cc).  What an intriguing and captivating book!  Much has been made of it that was intended by the Revelator, Christ, or by the author, John, however, when grasped for what it really is, it is a special work.   It is a work of encouragement, strength, and hope.  It does not focus as much on what is going to happen as it does on what is happening.  There is a battle taking place.  It may be unseen but it is very much felt and the evidence of such a battle is obvious in our world around us.
One of the greatest truths that is shared through the book, however, is that Christ is in the midst with us and for us.   You see it again and again.  He is here with us and He is to be praised.
Today I was led to a verse of praise that gives a sevenfold (or a complete) worship of Christ.  It is found in Rev. 5:12- “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”   This sevenfold worship exclamation is hitting on the numerology that runs through Revelation.  Seven is a complete number because of the 7 days of the complete creation.  (Six, for instance, is a number that takes away the Sabbath day of rest, and there is much play off of that number as well in Revelation.)  The point is the sevenfold worship is complete.  We are to give complete worship to Christ.  He receives all the power, money, wisdom, might, honor, glory and blessing that this world can afford.  He is worthy of it all...and we ought to live like it.
Let's end the year giving Him praise so that we can start it right as well.

Wonderful Grace

Well, I hope you had a Merry Christmas!  I have had a wonderful one.  We went to Hattiesburg to see my in-laws and had some wonderful Christmas times there.  Dawn's father is in poor health, or at least has a very hard time being able to do much.  Hard to say 'goodbye' under such circumstances.  We spent a wonderful Christmas Eve with our church family.  What a special night!  We worshipped the Lord together on Christmas morning  and that was great too.  Yesterday we headed out toward the Carolinas.  Last night we had a great time with my side of the family.  We are busy these days but blessed.  Now I plan to spend the next week as the mother of Jesus did surrounding his birth...pondering.

This morning as I read I was overwhelmed by the grace of God.  (www.lifejournal.cc)  Particularly this morning, it was the message to church of Laodicea.  First he tells them He is tired of their unrepentant hypocrisy.  Like coffee, either be hot or cold for Christ, but don't be lukewarm.   However, after challenging them to get it right, the Father of the Prodigals swings open the door of opportunity.  Rev. 3:20- Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.  You are probably very familiar with that passage but it sure is sweet when you read it in its context.  To those who are in sin, troubled, and wayward, come to me and I will come in, dine with you, and not only cleanse you of your sin, but guide you for the days ahead.  That, my friend, is a blessing.    It is also an opportunity!  Take advantage of it today if you need cleansing.  If you are clean before the Lord, just celebrate the one that has made you clean!
Enjoy the God of grace today!

Winning the Daily Battle

It is my effort each day to read the prescribed passage of Scripture and find a verse with a 'truth for the day' to live on and to gain strength and guidance from.  My primary intent is to find something that works for me that day and then talk about it a little in the overflow.  It is my hope to encourage others as well, however, there is no doubt that some days the greater application is personal.
When I read what I read today  (www.lifejournal.cc), I am overwhelmed by so many opportunities to gain strength and guidance.   John is rich and good stuff.  I love in John 9 when the healed man that was blind says, "I don't know all the details, I just know I can see."  They were tossing this man into a power struggle, but he could not have cared less, he could see.  You don't have to have it all figured out, just proclaim what you know and spend more time with the Lord in the Word so that you will know more and more.
However, my passage for the day, is one of my favorite in Scripture: John 10:10- The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.  The life to the fullest that is ours for the taking will only come through the Lord.  He gives life abundant, life complete.  However, He also warns us and that is where I want to focus for a few minutes.  There is an evil one that loves to steal, kill, and destroy, and he is does it like a thief will. He does it to not be noticed.  He does it through sneaky temptations that seem to have mild consequences but grow into profound conflict.  He does it through whispering sweet nothings in our ear- "you are nothing"- and driving us to the point that we feel our thoughts and actions do not matter.  He does it through dulling our consciences by using the images and words that we are exposed to make us less aware.   He does it by convincing us to let it all hang out and to say and do whatever we feel.  The hurt and the mistakes that can come from such leads to destruction.  There is a battle with evil taking place all around us constantly and it is a consistent attempt to throw us off of our game, lead us away from Christ, to steal our thrill, to kill our zeal, and to destroy our joy.  Don't let him do it.  No temptation has seized you except what is common to us all.  God will always provide you a way out.   You will not win unless you take it.  Don't be caught in the trap of the evil one.   Live life abundantly today.

Internet access may be vague in the coming days and schedules will be wild.  Writing may be little to none until New Years.  Forgive me and keep walking toward the light.  You don't need me everyday but you need a good Word from God every day to win the war.  End this year right by walking with him daily.

Stone Throwing

Today we deal with a passage that I hear quite a bit about...usually out of context.  It is concerning the woman who had been caught in adultery- a capital offense in the law, although not often enforced in the days of Christ.   In John 8 people were ready to stone as the law allowed.  You quickly get the impression that this is the work of a kangaroo court of loosely drawn together cohorts.  When they try to corner Christ (never successful, He even defeated death itself), the following happened: And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her." 8And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10Jesus stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more."  - John 8:7-11 (www.lifejournal.cc) .
Now this passage is often brought up when one is seen to have judged another.  If you say that what someone else does is wrong, someone else very likely will stand up and say "ye who are sinless, cast the first stone."  Point well taken, none of us are perfect.  However, does that mean that none of us can judge between right and wrong?  By no means.  We are still to call a spade a spade.  Sexual sin is still wrong, even though the standards of society have slid to the red light district, and it always will be.  Any and all sin is still sin.  God's standard has not changed even though America's has.  We must stand on God's standard and stand for what is right.  Does that mean we condemn, black ball, write off, or beat up everyone that does wrong?  We better not, because we have done wrong as well.  No, instead we correct folks with grace and mercy.
When God puts someone in your path that is caught in a mess, see it as an opportunity to honor God and restore some brokenness.  It should not be a chance to get something on someone or fill up the social network boards with rumors concerning them.  Honor God and love your neighbor every chance you get...even today!

Be Healed!

I love the questions of God.  When God asks a question, it is not because He needs the answer.  He already knows all.  No, God asks questions so that we can ponder on the answer, or get to the heart of the matter.  The one that Christ asks today in John 5 (www.lifejournal.cc) is one that can easily be missed.  It is in John 5:6- When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?"  Now when you first look at that question, it may seem rather silly.  This man has been an invalid for 38 years and been by this pool of healing for probably a long time. Of course, he wants to be healed.  Maybe so, but there are a lot of people that really don't want healing.  There are those whose glass is always half-empty.  Everything stinks in their lives-- just ask them.   They are depressing folks that need a touch of heavenly sunlight in their dark dreary days.  Many of them do not want help, just sympathy.
Then there are those that want things to change, but they don't want to make the changes that are needed in their lives to solve the conflicts, heal the wounds, guide the paths that they need aid in.  There are many defeated Christians on the rolls of churches because they have choose their ways instead of His Ways.  Even when alerted, some do not want to change.
Then there are those that want to be changed.  They are ready for healing and will do what it takes to get it. It is a refreshing blessing to help folks who are willing to repent, turn from their previous ways, "take up their mat and walk." That is the way the Lord will have it.
So while we are talking about questions, let me ask one of you:  Do you want to be healed? As we approach a new year, it is an opportunity to clean the slate and start over again (at least in our mindset).  Are you willing to do what God is showing you that you need to do to make the necessary changes?  I hope so.  Don't wait until January 1.  Start today. You will be blessed if you do.   Be healed!

It's About Him

Years ago I had a secretary that was a preacher's wife and the daughter of a preacher.  She had experienced a lot in her husband's various pastorates (and maybe Dad's too).  I did not take her as wise from it;  instead, I took her as bitter from it.   As a young minister, it was somewhat discouraging to hear her take at times.  One time we were talking about churches and caring for the ministers and such and she said- If you don't look out for yourself, nobody else is going to look out for you.  I immediately thought (and should have said)- No, you are wrong.  I have an advocate.  I have one that steps in and takes care of my needs.  I didn't say that, but I believed it and I have seen the evidence many times over.   It is my job to promote Him and He'll take care of me. He always has and, although I may have rough roads ahead- who knows?, so far it has been pretty smooth.  God has been good to me and many times his goodness has flowed through the dear people I have been blessed to pastor.  I'm going to try to focus on Him and "look out" for Him, and trust Him to take care of me.  Or as John 3:30 (www.lifejournal.cc) states- He must increase, but I must decrease.  It ain't about me....or you...it is about Him.  Make it about Him today!

What's Driving You?

Today (www.lifejournal.com) Peter is speaking of the unrighteous and what happens to them.  He uses some terms that got me thinking.  2 Peter 2:17- These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.
First, the waterless springs- what a term!  How much good is a spring without water?  It has missed its purpose.  When we went outwest this past summer, we were told it was one of the driest seasons ever.  There was little water and conservation efforts were being made.  We traveled over many areas on the interstate that were identified as washes. A wash is an area that has free flowing water during the rains but are dry when there is no rain.  It looked like areas where a river was but is no longer.  Understanding their need for water, it was somewhat sad to see; even though, I understood that washes could be dry when there is enough water.  It still served as a constant reminder of the need for water.  A waterless spring--what a shame!
God did not intend for us to be empty.  He instead intends for us to be those of deep water.  Listen to
Proverbs 20:5- The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.  Unlike the one that is a waterless spring.
Well, why are they waterless springs?  Because they are "driven by storms."  That reminds me of another passage that talks about the obstacles we face from being all God wants us to be.  We are to attain the measure of the fullness of Christ in our life.  When we pursue Christ there is advantages:
Eph. 4:14- so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.  The storms that drive the waterless springs lead them to errant doctrines, mixed motives, and deceitful plots.  The people of God  do not need to be blown from one episode to another by the things of this world.  Instead we need to be driven by a passion for the Lord that leans on the depths of our relationship with Him.  It is from those depths that we draw out the spiritual subsistence that we need for what we may face.
The question is what will drive you today?  Will it be the storms of this world or your passion for Christ?
What's driving you?

Don't Underestimate!

Christ has made a difference in our lives.  Now, we must make a difference in our world.   The two examples that stood out to me today (www.lifejournal.cc) speaks of marriage and the difference that we can make with our mates.  I Peter 3:1 -  Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2when they see your respectful and pure conduct.   Never underestimate your influence, even when you say nothing.
And....v.7- Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.  Not only do compassionate ways help your relationship, but the strength of the relationship helps your prayer life.   Christ at the center of our lives puts Christ at the center of our relationships and that makes a difference.
What stands out to me, however, is what is true in your Christlike interaction with your spouse, is very relevant in how you respond to the world around you.  We are to live like Noah- blameless and above reproach.  We are to live like Jesus- being understanding and honorable.  Let's treat others in a way that will point them to Christ-- in our interaction with them and even when we are just gracing their presence.
What a job that is for us today!  Do your best to honor God today by honoring others.

Today's Energy

I guess I was about 10 when a new kid came visiting in our neighborhood.  My buddies and I were riding our bikes past a house with no kids when we saw a kid in the yard.  He was an outgoing kid, quite boisterous and quickly irritating.  He was visiting at a house that had a ditch that we loved to jump.  Therefore, we are jumping ditches and talking politics (or whatever 10 year old boys talked about before modern technologies).  He told us he could jump better than we could (he didn't have a bike with him), he was smarter than us (he at least had a smarter mouth) and he was more daring than us (da,da,da,da, da...).  Then he said (and I don't remember how it came up) that he had read the Bible through 3 or 4 times.   I told him he had not, for I knew that a 10 year old (or anyone else, as far as that goes) would have to have more fortitude than he had to get through Leviticus.   We never settled the issue and I don't guess I ever saw or played with him again.  I do know that on many occasions I have thought about his claim.  I still don't believe it, nor did I believe much of what he said.   I am not saying it is not possible.  I am sure some could do it at that age, but probably not very productively.   That is what got me that day.    Even as a 10 year old, I thought, "Well, it sure doesn't show that you have read it through."
I have seen it many times since.   I have heard and seen many people claim to read the Bible for hours or over and over again, but too often, the evidence of such depth is not evident in their lives.    I find myself these days referring anyone that has trouble in their lives to reading a plan like this one (www.lifejournal.cc), finding the verse of the day and letting it apply to their lives.  To read great amounts and never let them sink is useless.  To read and let it stick is spiritual lifeblood.  James puts it this way:  22But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.-- James 1:22-25
Don't get so lost in consumption that you forget to taste what you are consuming.  When I was a kid, they wanted us to rest a minute after eating before we played or especially before we swam.  We need to do that when we consume the Word.  Take it in.... let it digest.....then go run....you will have a lot more energy for the day.  Enjoy His Lead today!

Entertaining Angels

We were at the church doing some type of ministry one morning when a couple came in that was obviously road weary.  They told me they needed gas and were trying to get to 'so and so' (I don't recall.).  I told them to meet me at the Exxon next door and I would give them some gas.  I walked over and waited at the pump.  Soon a little car weighed down by a couple's belongings pulled up.  I slipped my credit card in the slot and told them how much they could have.  He started pumping...and talking.  They said they had left their home in Ohio some months ago and were traveling from campground to campground. I asked him if he knew the Lord and he said, "Oh Yes!  The reason we are traveling is to share the Gospel.  We have a campground ministry."  When he got done pumping he gave me a few of his custom gospel tracts.  I prayed for them and wished them God's richest blessings.  They drove off to the next campground.  I asked myself on the way back to the church:  crazy transient people or was I entertaining angels?  I see don't know and won't this side of eternity.
I have not filled up too many people's cars at those pumps in the almost five years I have been at Houston.  At most, maybe twice a year.  However, I have led people to the Lord at a $20 gas stop and I may have even entertained angels. I take Hebrews 13:2 seriously- Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.  (www.lifejournal.cc)
So the question may be:  $20?  You don't even know them!  Well, I'll give $20, no problem, for the opportunity to lead someone to the Lord or to even entertain an angel.  More important, I'll take the time or, at least, I ought to...every time.  We all should, every chance we get.  Today, see the fields white unto harvest as the Lord sees them....OR....see the angels encamped around us.... either way, it is worth the look.

Stir It Up

I don't believe there is anything magic about the church building.  Is a place that is set aside for worship of the Lord and the training and the fellowship of God's people special?  Of course it is.  However, what makes it special is what is done in it and who enters it.  The Lord is within us and when we come together for His Cause, His Kingdom, and His Worship, it is special.  So, I don't believe it is a magic potion to walk in the church building every Sunday....however, I do believe it is desperately needed.  Time and time again I have seen the results of those who have neglected the corporate worship of God.    Without a consistent pattern of corporate worship (and a daily pattern of personal worship), life leads to confusion, self-sufficiency, and a cooling of one's spiritual senses.  You become more vulnerable to become spiritually hardened, selfish minded, and dangerously casual concerning the things of God.  The church building is not magic but it is mighty special, but it is because of the fellowship of God's people that takes place in it.  That fellowship is so desperately needed in each and every one of our lives. Hebrews puts it this way:   Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. -Hebrews 10:23-24 (www.lifejournal.cc)
I have never met a Christian that did not need to be stirred up from time to time.  All of us need to be reminded of the good works that ought to mark our lives.  None of us need to neglect the worship of God's people.  It ought to be a habit.  I encourage you to be a part of worship.  Tomorrow night we will be blessed by our preschool choir's presentation and our 'Happy Birthday, Jesus!' party.   They are even signing autographs before the presentation!!  Sunday we will worship the Lord together on Sunday morning and on Sunday evening at 5:00 we will have our Christmas Celebration Fellowship- we would call it a party but we are too spiritual for that!   What great opportunities to be stirred up for Him!

Please be in prayer about a great event tonight.  Tonight we will be giving out our Christmas food bags.  This is always a great event. Probably close to 80 families will come, be prayed for, have the Gospel shared with them as needed, and then be blessed with some Christmas groceries.   A local grocery store helps us with this event as well as individuals and Sunday School classes.   We always welcome you to come and pray with folks or take their groceries to their vehicle.  It is a great way to express the love of God this Christmas season!  If you cannot be there, please pray for us.  Thanks!

No Substitutes

Substitutes are not quite the same.  When I was in the 8th grade, my math teacher got sick and missed almost the entire year.  We had a substitute practically the whole year.  Substitutes are not trained or credentialed in the same way...and they cannot do it like the teacher can.  I was horrible in math (a strong subject for me) that year and it set me for catching up throughout most of my high school career.  Substitutes are not the same.

I substituted one time.  I have been involved in high school football most of my ministry and I wanted to get to know the students better.  I try to take Fridays off when I can and I decided that I could substitute on Fridays if I was needed.  I attended a one-day seminar and I was ready! That seminar and a high school diploma is all you need (in most places).  My schedule did not work out like I planned and I was only able to do it one time.  When I walked in, I had a note that said " show them 'Finding Nemo' the movie."  Halfway through the first class I cut the movie off and we played Psychological Jeopardy (it was a psychology class).  I got the textbook and found some basic info and we played the game.  It was not that bad a day.  Even with that, a substitute is not the same as a teacher.   When the real teacher comes, learning can really happen!

We read Hebrews today (www.lifejournal.cc).  Hebrews is not an easy book, however, it helps to keep something in mind.  The Hebrew writer is trying to reinforce to the Jews that Christ really is the promised Messiah.  The Old Testament people and truths that are referred to are mentioned to reach the Jews where they were and show them where they should be: believing in Jesus.  One of the main overriding points:  Jesus is the real thing!  Salvation can really happen now!  All the others were substitutes, getting people ready for the real thing in Jesus.  Now in Christ, we can rest assured!  Hebrews 6:19-20-We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20where Jesus has gone... Christ is the real thing and He has taken the place of previous high priests and there is no need for anymore.  He is sure and steadfast.  He anchors our soul and we can rest in Him.  Let's not settle for substitutes today!  Let's rest in Him.

The Chase Cutter

A telemarketer called the church the other day.  Somehow the phone call got to me.  I heard the computer pause that always identifies mass calling (I think it is a voice activated feature on their headset) right off the bat.  The hair on the back of my neck is already raised.  However, I was told that he had identified himself with the North American Mission Board, so I was a little more receptive.  He began to tell me about a website that addresses various social issues through videos of popular, thought invoking preachers. While he talked, I could hear the chatter that is commonly heard when the telemarketer is calling from a room full of college students with headsets on and are automatically calling every Southern Baptist Church that the computer can give them. Another sure sign of trouble.  I went to the website, saw the guys who speak on it, and saw the issues that speak about.  Not a North American Mission Board affliate. As illustratively as he could, he told me how this website would raise so many out of the muck and mire of their sin by giving video addresses of their deepest spiritual concerns... I asked him what he was selling.  He continued to explain the website (which I had a pretty good insight about now).  I asked him again what he was selling- an affliation into this website? Finally he got to his point, and then I got to mine.....
I don't like folks to drag on about stuff that I have no interest in and that is why I love the Word of God.  It gets to the point...even the heart of the matter.  Notice (www.lifejournal.cc) what it says:  Hebrews 4:12- For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.   I love to get in the Word first thing in the morning because it gets to the heart of the matter.  God knows my heart, what I need to look at, be burdened about, change, or respond to.  He gives me what I need and cuts to the chase.  He knows my thoughts and my intentions and the Word dissects me quickly.  If it is not a daily dose in your life, you are a missing out on the greatest Counselor, the greatest Advice, the greatest Direction, and the greatest Friend.  He loves you dearly and uses His Word to get to the heart of the matter.  He cuts to the chase through the Word.

Fanning the Flame

Well, my attempt is daily but it does not always work out like that.   One morning I got up early and got ready to write and my 5 year old got up with me at 5AM sporting a fever and sick with strep throat.  Not only did it change my morning, it changed my day.  Life does not always work with our schedule.  Then it was internet troubles.   Oh well, I'm back!

One of Paul's precious letters to Timothy is what we read today.  Timothy had a legacy of faith that he followed after.  He also had Paul, who was teaching him as they went.  Paul encourages him in this letter to keep on keeping on. www.lifejournal.cc I Timothy 1:6-7- For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.  I grew up in a house with a wood fireplace.  Thankfully it was not our only source of heat or our main source of heat, but it was a great way to see an 'army man' melt to death.  (You should have heard the commentary that I gave with my face inches away from the fire.)  When I was not trying to sneak small burnable items into the fire, I was trying to avoid cutting firewood.  Honestly, I usually did avoid it.  (Every now and then sorry older brothers come in handy.)  I liked to build the fires.  We had a formula.  Crump paper first.  Strategically place the kindling.  Lay a few logs on it and start the smaller fires in various parts.  If one would begin to burn out, blow on it and it will 'fan the flame' and burn a little better.  However, to get it going and to keep it going, it helped to give it your attention.   Our spiritual lives need attention as well.  If you are a Christian, you have started right.  Everything is in place.  Now it is about making sure you continue to burn for the Lord.  Give it your full attention and let the Spirit of God blow through your life to keep you on fire for Jesus.  It is easy to let it fade. Much will come in the way or you may just drift.  Don't!  Fan the flame today!

Hearty Helping

It is always interesting to me how people use and abuse Scripture to say whatever they want it to say.  When I was a kid, I had a neighbor named Charlie.   Charlie was a great guy that was disabled due to legal blindness.  He had disease in one and had a work accident involving the other.  He saw little.  However one summer he needed drops put in daily and needed my help.  I was about 10 years old and I went up there daily at 10 AM sharp to put drops in.  He never forgot it.  He was a great guy, a wonderful neighbor... plus he had HBO.   That did not excite us for any reason except boxing.  HBO has good boxing (Mike Tyson fought most of his fights under contract with HBO before he lost his mind...then served his time...then found his soul...then tattooed his face.... then .....).  So Charlie would pop popcorn and provide the Pepsi and Dad and I would go watch the fights on a Friday or Saturday night.   Somebody would win and say, "I just want to thank the Lord that he allowed me to beat the stuffing out of that guy.  I can do all things through Christ..."  That is not what that Scripture is saying.   That is an abuse of Scripture.  In Philippians 4:13 Paul is talking about when he has resources and when he does not.  It is actually a financial statement, although it can be used in several other contexts.  However it does not fit in all of them that I have heard it used in.
Another one is this misquote:  "You know what the good book says:  He won't put more on than you can handle."  What does that even mean?  Anything that you are trying to handle, you better give to Him regardless of whether it is big or small.  It is really a misuse of I Cor. 10:13 that speaks of the spiritual means of escaping temptation.
Today our reading (www.lifejournal.cc) has a passage that is often misused as well (or has been historically).  Colossians 3:22-23-   Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.   The misuse came when people tried to justify slavery by saying the Bible did not speak against it.   However, Paul's addresses to slaves or servants are not to condone or condemn but to give guidance, no matter your circumstances.   In addition, slavery of the 1st century was quite different than slavery of the 19th century.   The question for us is: how does this passage apply to us?  It is quite simple to see:  whoever you are serving or working for, by choice or not, do it with all that you have because you are also doing it for the Lord.    Don't serve just when people are looking or just in capacities where people will see you.  Don't serve just to make others happy or in jobs that simply appease people.  Do whatever task may come.  Do it all with all your heart.  You are serving the Lord, not just others.
Serve the Lord today, whether or not it involves anyone else or whether or not it is seen.  Serve Him heartily!

Hands on the Plow

Christ said we need both hands on the plow and we need not look back.  Looking back causes crooked rows.  Looking back is when we consider the world and its ways as real options.  Looking back is when we don't keep our eyes on the task at hand: living our lives for the Lord Jesus Christ.  I tell my daughter that when she is taking a test and struggling with it and someone else gets up and looks to be done with ease, don't pay any attention to anyone else, keep your eyes on your paper and keep on working. That is what we must do in the Christian life.  We don't have the time, the energy, or the focus to wander around wondering about the validity of the Christian life.  We just need to be hard at it.  That looking around stuff will cause you to lose focus on the task at hand.  You will hoe crooked rows when you do that and let's not hoe crooked rows.  Paul put this way (www.lifejournal.cc) in Philippians 3:12-14- Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Today (and everyday) let's keep our hand on the plow. Let's keep focused on the finish.  Let's not let anything distract us from keeping our eyes on Jesus and living our lives to please Him today.

Bold Prayer

One of the great questions to ask someone (if you really mean it and will do it) is:  How can I pray for you?  What needs specifically can I pray for you about?  I have made it a habit and 90% of the time it is health related.  We are plagued by focusing on physical needs when it comes to prayer, instead of focusing on the greater spiritual needs and including the physical.  Of course, if you have a physical need, it becomes much more glaring sometimes than the quieter yet more sever spiritual needs.
As we read Ephesians today (www.lifejournal.cc) our setting is a letter of encouragement that Paul is writing to the Ephesian church.  He writes from prison for standing up for Christ. How do you pray for one that is imprisoned falsely just for his bold bond with the Word of God and the message of Christ? Notice what he says in Ephesians 6:18-20-  To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
Have you ever thought that maybe one reason you may not speak as quickly as you should for the things of the Lord is because you have not prayed for God to give you the words?  To give you boldness?
Have you ever thought that the witness of the Christian Church may not be as strong as it should because we have not seriously prayed for boldness?  The pulpit can be clearly bold, but if it does not translate into the pew and out into the streets of our lives, does it carry out the appropriate fulfillment that allows us to flavor and light our world?  It does not.
I am not saying do not pray for their health of others, the release from a difficult circumstance, or the relief of the balm of the Spirit of God, but I am saying we need to include and underline the needs of our fellow brothers and sisters in the faith to live bold for Christ.
I pray that for you today.  Please pray that for me as well.  And have a great one.

Bitter Seeds

Ephesians 4: 26-27- Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27and give no opportunity to the devil. (www.lifejournal.cc)  One of the blessings of the pastorate is the people that you get to minister alongside.  I have friends in several states because, over time, I have moved around or they have moved around.  These friends  are those that I have had the joy of pastoring or ministering beside.  It is a blessing...most of the time.  Two people fascinated me in the first church that I pastored.  One of them was a man with a mean streak.  Don't misunderstand!  He was a good guy and meant well, but he just could not help it.  He had to chew me out once a year whether I needed it or not.  One time it was over a table that a Vacation Bible School had left set up in 'his' classroom.  Now there was nothing left on the table and nothing else left in the room...just one of those folding fellowship hall tables.  I walked in the class to greet the men and it was like I had crossed the property line of a pit bull.     I said 'Good morning' and then it was 'Good night.'  Now let me ask you: how many hours do you think he had logged in volunteerism for the VBS?  You guessed it: Zero.  He would buy me a doughnut and a cup of coffee from time to time but....Then there was another lady.  This dear lady had been through a lot and she was going to take it out on you.  She had married a mean man with a lot of problems and it had made her a bitter lady.  When Dawn and I announced our engagement she walked up to me and said, "Don't get married.  It will be the worst mistake you ever make."  Well, I did get married and outside of accepting the Lord, it is the best decision I ever made.
It is ugly to see bitter folks.  Do you know how folks get bitter?  They let the sun go down on their anger.  They hold grudges. They don't forgive.  They let negative thoughts sit and seed and sprout more negative thoughts like horrible weeds in a flower garden.  Before long the weeds have taken off and are snuffing out the beauty.  Don't let it happen.  Forgive and move on with life.  The devil's seeds grow ugly, ugly things.  Wake up with a smile today and go to bed with one too!

I owe, I owe...

It is not just the seven dwarfs that could sing that song.  It is a lot more of us...all of us.  Let me remind you this morning what you owe (www.lifejournal.cc): Romans 13:7-8- Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.  You owe taxes so pay them.  You owe somebody something even if it is just the power company, so pay them.  And who you don't owe, you owe anyway.  You owe them respect and honor.  Who you don't show respect, show honor.  And as I think about the difference in respect and honor, I am thinking that isn't honor just ramped up respect.  Give to each what you owe today:  be nice, be respectful, be honorable.
And besides that remember v. 8- Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.  The law is God's rule and God's rule is to love each other.  Let's work today on how we respond to others.  Let's honor, respect and love the Lord, but honoring, respecting, and loving those He puts in our path.
I owe...I owe...its off to....

Bumper Sticker Truths

I may overwhelm you this morning with information overload, but I can't help it.  Some of my favorite parts of Paul's letters are found at the end (www.lifejournal.cc).  He gives bullets (and bunches of them) on how to live out your faith.  These 'bumper sticker truths' are plenty to keep us busy working on the matters God would have us focus on.  I just want to list several this morning and comment.  Take heart as He leads. Romans 12:9-Let love be genuine....Enough fake stuff.  Let's love with the qualities of I Cor. 13.
.....hold fast to what is good....It is easy to get sidetracked, but keep it between the ditches.
v.10-... Outdo one another in showing honor....What if our concern was to 'outserve' others for the Lord or to serve more faithfully than anyone else?  I don't mean service hours.  I mean honoring God by honoring others. I realize that it is not about being better than someone else, however, if you are trying to honor others by serving them in the Lord, you are placing them before yourself anyway.
...do not be slothful in zeal...How's your zeal? Do you have any zest for the Lord? Does your service for the Lord have that 'clean' smell?
...be fervent in spirit... Weakhearted faith won't get you far with the stuff of life...
v.11- ...Rejoice in hope....The only way you can rejoice in your hope is to have plenty of it, but, then again, how can you have anymore than you have, if you place all your hope in Christ.
...be patient in tribulation...Hard to do but worth the effort.
...be constant in prayer....Don't just talk about it, do it.
....Contribute to the needs of the saints...keep a watchful eye for who may need you.

A little overwhelming, huh?  No, not at all, it just reminds us all that we haven't got there yet.
Until we do,let's mark our mind and our walk with bumper sticker truths. Enjoy your Friday in the Lord!

Life's Funnel

I hope you are reading along with us each day.   From the middle of November to the end of the year, this Bible reading plan will click through a lot of the New Testament, but I encourage you to hold on to your seat and let God bless you along the way.  We are reading Romans now (www.lifejournal.cc) and it is not your easiest book.  Paul was a brilliant man and Romans reads like a Christian philosophy class.  Don't get discouraged if you get lost along the way.  Keep reading.  What he is driving at is the struggle that we have with sin and the victory that we have in Christ.  You have to keep  it on in perspective.  You need to understand the struggle for it is very real.  You need to understand the victory in Christ...for it is very real.  This morning I want to focus on the help that we have along the journey.  Romans 8:26- Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[g] for those who are called according to his purpose. 29For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
We get help along the journey.  The Spirit of God is interceding for us.  We don't have to eloquent in prayer, we just have to approach the throne of God faithfully.  The effectiveness of our prayers is not in our eloquence, but in our faithfulness to go to the throne and allow the Spirit to speak in and through us.  When we pray, we ought to leave it with God.  We can rest assured because He is working in our lives for the good.  Life is not as chaotic as it seems, when you are walking with the Lord.  Why?  He is in control.   He is working in you. He has prepared the way. He has cleansed the Christian and made what was wrong right.  Now like the sands in an hourglass, we are funneling our way to the day when we see Him face to face and are glorified.  We can rest in that.  God is at work in our today.  He is at work in our tomorrow.  He was at work in our yesterday.  What are we worried about?  Let's just seek His Face, live to please Him, and look forward to what is ahead!
