Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Today, on the day that we celebrate the Lord's Birth, we read the book of 1 John.

One of my favorite verses reminds me of what this day is really all about.  1 John 5.13- I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.

The promise of eternity is really the joy of Christmas.  Eternal life is really the reason for the season.  From a humble manger to a mangled cross to an empty tomb to an eastern sky to the land of the river of life, Christmas is all about the opportunity for each of us in Christ.   Take time to celebrate that today.

After today, I will be taking a little break in my 'almost daily dairy'.  I will be with family and taking some time to focus my direction, both personally and pastorally, toward 2014.  Be not mistaken, I will still be in the Word daily, just not writing to you about it.  If you were to dare miss it in these days, please voice a prayer for me when it comes to mind as I seek God's direction and vision for this blog, for my church, and for my life.

I will see in 2014, if it's the Lord's will (James tells us to say that).  It is a joy to be your friend on the world wide web!

By The Cross At Christmas

We read John 19-21 today.

John 19.25-...Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

This time of year we often think of Mary by the manger.  Mary, also, stood by the cross.   This time of year we often think of Jesus in the manger.  I believe we ought to see Him on the cross as well, because the joy of Christmas comes in the victory of the cross.

We will celebrate as a church both of these:  the coming of Christ incarnate and the sacrifice of Christ eternal at 5 PM in a short Lord's Supper worship at FBC.   If you are in town, take a few moments to look past the manger and look to the cross with us.

A Daily Guide

Today we read John 15-18.

When Jesus spent that valuable time in the upper room with His disciples, He told them truths to remember when He was not physically with them, when they felt alone, and when times may get tough.  One of the greatest truths he shared is found in John 16.13- When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

What makes the truth so great is that it applies to us as well.  The Holy Spirit will guide you daily preparing you for whatever may come.  Prepare for tomorrow with the Word of God in your hand and the Spirit of God leading your life.

Have a great day!

The Son in Your Clouds

Today we read John 12-14.

I am blessed to spend a couple of days with my brother-in-law and one of his daughters.  I look forward to spending time with my parents, brothers, and their families after Christmas.  It is always fun to celebrate with Dawn and the girls.  However, I understand the other side of Christmas now.  Although we were blessed to go to a nursing home and celebrate Dawn's father's recent hospital release, we will not be going to Hattiesburg this year.  Her mother will celebrate Christmas in glory for the second time and that leaves a cloud over the season for us.  We realize so very often now how life changes through the days.

I am thankful, however, we are not alone...even when we may feel like we are.  There is a lot of folks that have clouds hanging over their festive seasons.  However, they are not alone.  John 14.1- "Let not your hearts be troubled.  You believe in God; believe also in me."  He is the reason for the season and He is there with us in the midst of it.

May He shine through your clouds!

Cool Numbers

Today we read John 5-6.

One of the great joys that I have in ministry is being able to minister alongside my fellow church members.   We have ongoing ministries that keep us busy all year long.  This time of year, however, always has a lot more people asking and I have been blessed in recent days to be a part of wonderful experiences that have been blessed and led by the Lord.

At Thanksgiving we provided 99 turkeys to 100 families.  One man said that he did not want a turkey because he 'wouldn't know what to do with it.'  Last Thursday night we served 100 families hams that were donated by a local grocer and, just like at Thanksgiving, each family also got a good bag of groceries to accompany the meat. Did we plan for 100?  Yes.  However, we have planned for that many before, but never had that many.  This year it was a blessing to turn no one away and to have none left over.  The day before the last giveaway a local farmer and faithful member of our church donated 15 boxes of world famous Vardaman Sweet Potatoes and each family went home with a good sack o' taters.  That ministry comes alongside the Samaritan Purse Christmas Shoebox Ministry, the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, the Prison Christmas Bag Ministry, the monthly free medical clinic, our ministry to travelers (twice just this week), and the many families that have been adopted for the Christmas season.  It is a blessing to be a part of these wonderful works of God.

I was reminded of all of that this morning as I read about the feeding of the 5,000.  One key verse that we base our ministry policies on is found in John 6.10a- Jesus said, "Have the people sit down."
Why is that important?  It is important because that was the processing procedure for the Lord. Sit them down so that the feeding can be organized.  That is what we do.  We do not ask financial questions.  We do not ask for identification.  We simply ask that they allow us to get their name, pray for them, and only take one bag per household.  Most need it. Some may not.  That is for the Lord to work out with each individual.  He told us to feed the hungry and I am happy to be a part of such a ministry as I am with First Baptist Church.

Exactly 100 families...twice...ain't that cool!  Have a blessed day!

As You Are

Today we read John 2-4.

It is mighty reassuring to me this morning when I read of the woman at the well in John 4.   She was a woman with a lot of personal problems and a woman that did not seem very spiritual.   To most she would not had been considered even a candidate for a walk with Christ.  However, He met her where she was, welcomed her, spoke to the heart of the matter, and changed that woman right there on the spot. He knew her downfalls and He took her as she was and changed her to be what He would have her to be.

After she met Christ, she went into town and told some folks and John 4.30 captures well- They went out of the town and were coming to him. She told them about a man who knew her unbelievably but loved her beyond measure.  Once they heard it, they went out of their way to come to Him 'as they were.'

What an opportunity we have in Christ.  He will receive us and change us, if we will come to Him (He even comes to us.  We just have to respond in obedience.)  Plus, whoever we share Him with can be changed as well.  What a friend we have in Jesus!

Sop your biscuit in that gravy today and enjoy His Presence.

Patience

Today we read the book of 2 Peter and John 1.

I admire patience.  I do not admire slowness, procrastination, or lollygagging, but I do admire patience.  Patience is not the person that is really, really slow at carrying out a task.  Patience is the person that waits on the person that is really slow...I am not very patient and I am sometimes around folks that do not work as fast as I wish they did.  I admire patience.  Some people say you should not pray for patience, because God will teach it to you in the longest lines at Wal-Mart.   I believe patience is a good, Godly trait, actually a fruit or evidence of His Spirit. Seek to have it in Him.  I want patience....I just need it in a hurry.

Sometimes people get impatient with God.  He doesn't work on their schedule.  He does not work on any of our schedules...and He is not going to.  He does not have to.  He works the way He works and we wait on Him.  During the wait keep something in mind.  2 Peter 3.8-But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Peter is pointing to God's patience with us in His Love.  He is slow to anger and He is abounding in love.  He works with us with patience.  Therefore, we ought to be...better be...patient with Him.  Don't try to figure out God's timetable.  Trust it.  He is patient with you.  You will have a much more fulfilling walk with Him, if you wait on Him....with patience.

Be Ready

Today we read the book of 1 Peter.   Man, we are zooming through some Scripture right now, but  remember, if you have been reading all year, this is a review of the New Testament.

It's coming.  Don't be threatened by it.  Don't be surprised by it.  Be prepared for it. The evil one is as faithful to terrorizing each day as the sun is to rising. 1 Peter 4.12 warns us to prepare-  Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

Be ready for it!  Rejoice that you are not in it alone.  He walks with you today.

Just Do It!

Today we read the book of James.

Let's read it! Let's ponder on it!  But not just that....Let's do it!
James 1.22- Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

As Dabo Swinney, coach of the Clemson Tigers, made famous:  ALL IN! Let's let nothing stop us!

Hope to see you in church.

The Son on a Cloudy Day

Today we read Hebrews 12-13 and the book of Jude.

I spent time yesterday visiting some folks that are going through some heavy, cloudy times.  I will see some more today.  What do you do on a 'cloudy' day?

Hebrews 12.2- ...looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith....

Sometimes on a 'cloudy' day, it is harder to see the Son, but you just keep on looking.  It is cloudy and rainy in Mississippi today, but the sun is still present and it is still shedding light on the day.  So it is the cloudy times of our lives,  He is there and He will shed light.  Keep looking to Him today!

Drawing Near

Today we read Hebrews 9-11.

The day does not always go like you want to and things come up that can be less than expected.  I did not get to write when I wanted to, but before anything else went down today, the Lord encouraged me with the following passages:
Hebrews 10.19-25- Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.  Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Let us Draw Near to God in Prayer.  Jesus has opened the door of access.  Let's make the most of it through faithfully praying.
Let us Hold Fast in the Strength of Our Faith.  Trusting Him at His Word, let us let it reflect in our lives.
Let us Draw Near to Each Other in Worship.  Faithful commitment to the Body of Christ is something that both the Body needs and each and every Christian needs.

Let us draw near to the opportunity that God has given us in Christ.  Have a blessed day....and night.

All for Me...and You

Today we read Hebrews 5-8.

Hebrews 7.25- Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

I celebrate today to know that I serve a God that saves.  No matter who you are, where you live, or what you know, through Christ you can draw near to God and be changed forever.    Not only that, but He prays for us.  As a matter of fact, He LIVES TO pray for us!

I don't know about you but for me that puts a fresh perspective on my day!  Celebrate it, live in it! Celebrate Him!  Live in Him....and have a great day!

Be Refreshing

Today we read Philemon and Hebrews 1-4.

Philemon is a short letter that is written by Paul on behalf of a slave named Onesimus.  Onesimus apparently escaped or went bad and then met up with Paul and had his life changed by the power of Christ. Now to make things right, Paul is sending him back home to his owner to settle the account.  Paul's hope is that Philemon, Onesimus' former owner,  will set him free and enjoy his Christian fellowship.

Therefore, Paul is writing and asking Philemon to do a very Godly, selfless thing.  Paul is asking him to do it for a man that wronged him.  Notice what he says, when he asks: Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ. - Philemon 20.  That last phrase got me.

How refreshing it is to see someone do the right thing in the Lord!  How much more refreshing it is to see them do it on behalf of others!  I want to encourage you to strive to be refreshing today on behalf of others and for the sake of the Lord.

Have a great day!

A Tennessee Thankful Heart

Today we read 2 Timothy 1-4.

Years ago I began investing in a Bible software program that has recently expanded over the years and that I have continued to invest in.  Now I have a lot more books on my computer than I do on my shelves and in boxes in closets, in my shed, and on my shelves.  It is an expansive (and expensive) program that can do a lot of wonderful things...and which I have always had very limited knowledge in how to use.  A training conference has been available for years and I have always wanted to attend.   When I saw the opportunity opening up for me to receive such training, I was excited about the possibility.  I now sit in Murfreesboro, TN after one day of training.  Two more days of training and I will know all that I can remember (It is a lot to take in).

Why the trouble? Because I believe it is important that I preach the Word as effectively as possible.  There is a lot that goes on besides writing sermons, so time efficiency is important and management is always needed. I enjoy preaching and being a pastor and I constantly want to be better at both while being the husband, father, and son that I need to be.  It is a balance that I need to continue to analyze, pray over, and be careful with.  The training is wise, but while I am here, some folks in my congregation are hurting miles away, phone calls don't feel so effective, and I miss the joy of threatening my daughters to get out of bed...RIGHT NOW!

When I read 2 Timothy this morning, I began praying prayers of thanks to God after reading              2 Timothy 4.3-4- For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening  to the truth and wander off into myths.
I believe we live in the day in America when many will not listen to the Word of God and the truth of it.  A watered down gospel is welcome to many.  However, I am thanking God this morning that God has blessed me with a church that appreciates Biblical preaching.  There is an understanding of the need, the time it takes, and an appreciation for the attempts that I make to preach effectively.  I am thankful for my family that often visits the gift shop at the hospital when I need to check on someone or understands when the hours get long.  Dawn has always had an understanding of what it takes and I am sitting in a hotel in a snowy and slick Tennessee reading the Word and thanking God for the opportunity He gives me to ministry His Word.  I love my family.  I love my church and I am thankful for the treasure that God has allowed me to be a steward of.  May I be effective in the great balance of life.

I did not attend to get so personal this morning, however, I am very thankful.  Never be afraid of the Word of God.  It speaks to the heart of the matter.

Have a great day!

Today's Theme

Today we read the book of Colossians.

We also read my favorite theme verse.  Oh, that we would live to carry out Colossians 3.17- And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

I think about my plans today.  Some are great fun (going to see It's a Wonderful Life with the senior adults) and some may be tough (decorating with my family!), however, all of it should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus with a thankful heart.

Let's work on that today!!

Our Fight

Today we read Ephesians 5-6 and Psalm 119.1-80.

I want to remind you this morning what our Scripture in Ephesians reminds us and what the Lord often reminds me.  We need to know where our battle is.  Ephesians 6.12 tells us- For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

We are not in a struggle with each other.  We are in a spiritual battle that we cannot see, but surely see the results of and feel the effects of.  Just because this spiritual battle is unseen, that does not mean that it is not real...more real than any physical battle we see.  I think about snipers hidden in the rough mountains of rough countries.  People have no idea where they are, yet the aim is steadily on a vital spot....so it is with the enemy.  He aims his fiery darts at our heart....our head...our marriage...our family...our attitude.  If we don't remind ourselves often of where the real fight is, we will blame and point at the wrong source.
Can I tell you a secret?  That is his strategy.  He wants to aim steady at us, while we miss where the real enemy sits.  We, sometimes, miss who the real enemy is.

Don't miss it today.  Put on the full armor of God and stand strong in the Lord.  We are not fighting each other.  We are on the same side.  Let's focus our attention on the real enemy.

Not Alone

Today we read Ephesians 1-4.

If you are feeling like today that you need someone to come alongside of you, that is OK. First, you are not alone.   The Lord walks with you and knows your circumstances.  Rest in Him today.  Second, we are intended to need one another and to grow stronger in Him by being together.  Look at
Ephesians 2.22- In him you are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.

We are intended to work this out together.  While we do, He is at work in us building us together as He dwells with us.

You are not alone today.  Don't you forget it!

Keep This In Mind

Today we read Romans 9-12.

We are now in the Christmas season.  24 more shopping days until Christmas.  However, one of my favorite things about Christmas is our opportunity to give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for Southern Baptist International Missions.  Southern Baptists have almost 5,000 missionaries serving in other nations sharing the hope that the world has in Christ. They answered God's Call to go.  We ought to do all we can to help them stay.  Throughout the month of December FBC, along with Southern Baptist Churches across the country, will be receiving the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and I encourage you to give.  Our goal is $20,130 in 2013.  Please pray about what God would have you to give and give as He leads.  Keep this in mind:
Romans 10.14-15- How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!"

Through the Valleys

Today we read Romans 5-8.

The Bible reading plan that we follow each and every morning is one that I found in a book, The Divine Mentor by Wayne Cordiero.  If you follow it throughout the year, it is designed to give you a daily twenty minute read that will take you through the Old Testament once and the New Testament twice.  When we get to the middle of November, we have finished the Old Testament and we are now reading the New Testament for the second time. I have been reading this plan for over five years now and it just always seems to me that we are zzzzooooooming through good, meaty stuff when we get to this last month and half of the year. Don't zoom so fast that you miss the meat.  In today's reading we find that we are alive in Christ, free from the law in Christ, and surrounded by the love of Christ.  That is the kind of stuff we all need to be reminded of.

Today, God spoke to me through Romans 5.3-5-Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

When things are tough, it is not that God has left you; instead, God is up to something.  In the midst of the difficulty, hang with Him and He will teach you to endure.  The endurance that you learn will build your character and turn your eyes back to the hope that you are to have in Christ.  God works in any situation.  We just need to make sure that we are in the proper place spiritually to sense, to hear, to follow His Lead through our valley.

I heard of a church bulletin blooper one time that said:  Don't let worry kill you!  Let the church help.
We have to be careful how we state things, but I do encourage you to take your worries, your troubles, and your trials to the Lord.  I believe some time with God's People this morning will do nothing but help.  I hope to see you in worship.

Not Just Knowing

Today we read Romans 1-4.

I hope you know that you need to know as much as you can about the Lord and His Word. I also hope you know that it is not simply what you know.  It is what you do with what you know. Paul put it this way in Romans 2.13 - For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.

Know it and do it today....and go Clemson Tigers!!!!

Continued Thanks

Today we read 1 Thessalonians 4-5 and 2 Thessalonians 1-3.

2 Thessalonians 2.16-17 -Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

I pray the joy and relaxation of the Thanksgiving season will continue for you and your family and the busyness of shopping and travel will not take your heart and mind off of Him.

Have a great Black Friday.

Most Thankful

Today we read Matthew 28 and I Thessalonians 1-3.

Today is Thanksgiving and I have much to be thankful for.  I came from a good family and get to celebrate Thanksgiving with them. I have a good family, am blessed with a dear wife, and some good girls.  God has blessed us with good health (as far as we know....you never really know, do you?) and we have a good time together. My father-in-law moved to town and we have been able to oversee his care during a difficult year of grief and transition after the loss of Dawn's mother.  That is a blessed opportunity. I get to pastor a church full of people that I love and it is a joy to be their pastor. I have much to be thankful.

However, what I read about this morning is what I am most thankful for. Matthew 28.5-7 says it like this-But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”

I am most thankful that there is an empty tomb  and that my Savior lives.  It is a game changer, a life changer, and an eternity changer.  Give thanks today that our Lord lives!

The Opportunity

Today we read Psalm 125 and Matthew 26-27.

Matthew 26.6-7- Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table.
When given the opportunity, the lady took the best she had and gave it to Jesus to anoint Him and to honor him.

When given his opportunity, Judas looked for the opportunity to betray Christ.
Matthew 26.16 states it simply- And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

One took the opportunity to give to Jesus.  The other took the opportunity to profit at the Lord's expense.

What kind of opportunity to seek for, hope for, and look for today.  Let's honor Him with our thanks and our selfless service for Him and for others.

Have a great day as we look forward to Thanksgiving.

A Sweet Reminder

Today we read Matthew 20-22.

Matthew 22.36-39 - “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Today, love Him with all that you are and reflect that love by loving on all that cross your path.

Bringing Children to Jesus

Today we read Matthew 17-19.

Matthew 19.14but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven."

May we do nothing in our lives to hinder children coming to Jesus.  Let's pump Jesus to our own children, to other children, and to every mother's child.  May our life not hinder them either.
Take a child to church today and show them Jesus on the way!

Thankful Thoughts

Today we read Matthew 14-16.

In Matthew 14 an event takes place that is part of the inspiration for an ongoing, wonderfully influencing ministry in our church.  In Matthew 14.13-20 Jesus feeds 5,000 men and their families. Notice the end result in v.20- And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

God led us to this ministry through three different avenues.  The first one was my mother's influence. My mother started a food ministry years ago through her church and has always been willing to help anyone that came and asked.  I used to tell mother how a lot of those people probably did not need it and used the system.  However, she had the wisdom to know that there was need mixed in with the dishonest and God would 'weed' it out as He sees fit.  I was not a huge fan of that ministry because you don't know who you are ministering to...that is until God spoke to me about it.  I give Him all the credit.  I would never have come up with this.   However, the second influence was the story of the sheep and the goats.   Some of those verses burned in my gut in Matthew 25.35-40-
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,  36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.'  37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?'
40 And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'
I believe the ministries that are listed are given to us by The Lord to be a part of.  Therefore, we have a feeding ministry each month when we give a bag of groceries to each family that comes on the third Tuesday at 6:30 PM.  We pray with them, counsel them spiritually, and give a bag.  We have a clothes closet for weary travelers that pass through from time to time.  We will wash their clothes for them, put them up for a night, feed them, and give them a new set of clothes for their journey (there is a God given story there too).  We visit the sick, have a ladies prison ministry, and look forward to doing more in that area.  I have a history of working with prisoners and law enforcement.

The third way God has led us in this ministry is through his way of doing it in the feeding of the 5,000.  He did not ask financial questions and did no background checks.  He organized them and feed them.  That is what we do.  IF we asked a bunch of those type questions, we could get funding, state food bank help, and attention through television food drives.  However, we chose to only ask spiritual questions and let The Lord provide.  So far through the generosity of FBC, private donors, a few can drives, a blessed farm grant that dropped out of heaven, a partnership with Grocer's Pride grocery store (they do a bunch to help us) and a little help from Wal-mart, we have given at least 600 bags of food each year for the last five years.  We give turkeys at Thanksgiving and hams at Christmas.

Why say all that?  I say that because as I read Matthew 14 today, I was thankful and reminded of how God blesses our efforts.  I am thankful for FBC and their willingness and voluntary service.  I am thankful to be a part of a church that loves Jesus and joins together in serving Him until He comes.

I am thankful this morning.

In Light of Him

Today we read Matthew 8-10.

The centurion had a worker that was very sick, paralyzed, and in need of help.  He approached Jesus and notice his method of asking in Matthew 8.8- But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.

I love the way he approached Christ.  He realized his own position.  He realized the position of Christ.  He goes on to elaborate about the power of the spoken word of Christ.

I think he had it right.  When we pray, we realize who we are.  We realize who He is.  We realize who we are in light of who He is.

Take time to do that today.

Lighten Up

Today we read the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7.

Matthew 5.16- In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Go and light your world today! Light it for your family this morning.  Light it for those at work or school today.  Light it for your friends.  Light it for your neighbors.  Who are your neighbors?  Sesame Street taught me a long time ago who my neighbors are:
Who are the people in your neighborhood?  In your neighborhood?  In your neighborhood?
Who are the people in your neighborhood?  They're the people that you meet, when you're walking down the street.  They're people that you meet each day.

Go and light your world!

Without Delay

Today we read Matthew 1-4.

Have you ever noticed HOW the disciples followed Jesus when he called them to join Him in ministry?  Notice it in Matthew 4.20- Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
If you look close, you will see a pattern of them following Christ immediately.

When the Holy Spirit speaks into your heart today to join Christ on mission, do not delay.   Follow Him immediately.

On Your Side

Today we read Psalm 124 and 2 Corinthians 11-13.

Psalm 124.1If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—

I don't know what you are facing today, but I can tell you that you are not in it alone.  If it was not for the Lord on your side, your whole story would be different.  However, thank God, He is on your side and when you lean on Him, you will be victorious.

Don't be fooled today.  You are not alone.  The Lord is on your side.

Sunday Morning Giving

Today we read 2 Corinthians 7-10.

2 Corinthians 9.6-8 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

Give generously, with a lot of thought and consideration, and allow God's grace to be in you and coming through you, so that everything that we do for Him will succeed.

I hope I see you in worship today.

The Word and a Good Cup of Coffee

Today we read 2 Corinthians 3-6.

2 Corinthians 4.16- So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

I trust the Word to give me what I need day by day, therefore I start my day with His Word.   The Word and a good cup of coffee will renew you daily.

Wake up and ask God to give you a word for today as you read His Word.  He will.  He wants to speak to you and move in your life.  We just need to be receptive to His Work.

Don't lose heart, just keep reading.

Yes

Today we read Job 41-42 and 2 Corinthians 1-2.

2 Corinthians 1.20- For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.

May you seek the Lord today and His Will and find your 'Yes' in Him!  Yes to Jesus.  Yes for Jesus.  Yes in Jesus.  Amen!

Steadfast and Strong

Today we read Psalm 149 and I Corinthians15-16.

I love the 'therefore' statements in the Scripture.  Anytime you see a 'therefore', always go back up and look at the writings before the 'therefore' statement to see what it is 'there for.'  I read a great one this morning in I Corinthians 15.58 -Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

When you go back and read the context of the passage, you will see that Paul was sharing with them that this is no all there is.  Eternity is real and SO much better.  As a result of what is to come, let us be steady and strong today.  May we not be ruled and rocked by the waves and winds of the day.  May be always be working in the Lord, when we see fruit of our results and even when we don't.
May we work until Jesus comes!

Be Steadfast and Strong today!

A Two-Way Conversation

Today we read Job 39-40 and 1 Corinthians 13-14.

Job 40.3-5 Then Job answered the Lord and said:
“Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
I have spoken once, and I will not answer;
twice, but I will proceed no further.”

Sometimes it is best to keep our mouths quiet and listen to the Lord.  It is so easy for us to ask and ask and ask or to tell and tell and tell.  We need, instead, to be still and know that He is God and listen.
Our time will be better spent if we pause to listen in the midst of our asking and telling.  Have  conversation with God today....and make sure you take time to listen.

The Spirit in You

Today we read Job 37-38 and 1 Corinthians 12.

1 Corinthians 12.7- To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

What the Spirit of God has enabled you to do is not just for you...it is not even for you.  It is for the sake of others and for the Glory of God.  Don't get selfish in your service for the Lord.  He has gifted you to be a blessing to others.

Go in the power of God and be a blessing today!

When Tempted

Today we read Psalm 122 and 1 Corinthians 9-11.

Temptation is very deceptive. It is easy for us to feel and respond differently to temptation than we should. I want you to be clear what Scripture teaches us about temptation.  These are some truths that you need to put on the mirror of your memory and be reminded of them everyday.

1.  You are not the only one being tempted like you are. 1 Cor. 10.13a- No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.
It is easy for us to feel like nobody could ever understand our circumstances.  That feeling of uniqueness will make us more vunerable to fall to the temptation.  The reality is that we all are different with different weaknesses and struggles, but there are common threads of sinful troubles in all of us.  If we all got real honest with each other, we would find our struggles are not that different. How we respond to it usually makes the most difference.   However, understand that a strategy of the evil one is to make us feel like we are the only one that has experienced such as this, therefore it is OK for us to do.  It is just a lie of the evil one. Don't fall for it.

2. You can walk away from your temptation without falling to it. I Cor. 10.13b- God is faithful and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability...
The devil also likes to make us feel that there is no way that we can walk away once we have been tempted.  That is simply not true.  Remember: being tempted is not a sin.  Falling to temptation is.
A child of God has the power of God within him, you have power to overcome.  Don't be fooled into thinking that you have no choice.  It is simply not true.

3. You have the power of God to guide you out of your temptation. 1 Cor. 10.13cbut with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
This point is worth reiterating because Scripture repeats it.  You are not on your own.  Others have been there.  The Lord is with you.  If you are a child of God with the Spirit of God in you, He will strengthen you.  He will also provide you a way out.  A temptation is not a dead end.  It is a cul-de-sac. Turn around.  Walk away. He has enabled you and provided you a path to walk away from temptation without yielding to it.

The first half of the battle is understanding these principles, believing them, and marking them on the memory of your mind.  The second is to reflect back on them when tempted, apply them, and walk away from temptation.

I pray that you do....today.

I hope to see you today at the noon lunch and the revival worship at 6:30 PM tonight at FBC.

What About You?

Today we read Job 35-36 and 1 Corinthians 7-8.

Sometimes people worry about other people's business too much.  We each have enough to worry about without sticking an uninvited nose into someone else's business.  It may seem easy to evaluate someone else's spiritual condition or give advice to one's spiritual direction, but it is not so simple.   Each circumstance is somewhat different and the people involved are somewhat different.  Sin is sin but it effects each of us individually and differently.  None of us are the same.  For the most part, however, we just need to worry about ourselves.  We each have enough trouble of our own.  The church of Corinth was concerned about each other's different backgrounds, marital conditions, and life patterns.  Paul gave a handy piece of advice in  I Corinthians 7.17- Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches.

In other words, get your heart right.  What does God need to do in you?  What hindrances do you have in your life that keep you from being all you can be for God?  Does God want to stir up a new work in you?

I could not think of a better time to ask. Our 'Walking With Jesus' Revival with Ken Smith starts this morning. You need to be in on it.  You have been prayed for. The church is praying for God to do a work that only He can do.  Don't miss out on the opportunity.  Be faithful to attend and invite someone to come with you.  I don't want you to miss a moment!

Put Up Or....

Today we read Job 34 and 1 Corinthians 4-6.

Anyone that has been around football or any other sport knows that there comes a time to shut your mouth and get the job done.  You can talk about what you can and will do for some long, then it is time to get it done.  Notice what Paul said to the Corinthians in 4.20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.

In other words, what goes in football, goes in your spiritual life too.  There is only so much you can talk about what you are going to do for the Lord until you do it.  Don't just talk about it.  Put yourself in the spiritual place for God to use you mightily!

I am highly anticipating a great revival in our church tomorrow.  I hope you will be a part of it!

The Coming Days

Today we read Job 33 and 1 Corinthians 1-3.

This Sunday we begin our "Walk With Jesus" revival with Ken Smith. I am highly anticipating what God will do in our midst.  I am thankful that Ken is coming to lead us.  He always has a word from God, a timely message that speaks to the heart of where we are.  I also know that God has lead Ken in  a new and very fresh way in the last days in preparation for this revival. We are blessed to have him come and lead us.

In preparation for revival I am praying that the Spirit of God will move mightily in our midst.  I pray that there will be no hindrances: from within individuals or in the body of believers.  The Spirit works in a ready people.

I am thankful that FBC is not like Corinth was.  They were a struggling, quarreling church that needed a lot of healing.  We are not that way, but all of us need a fresh touch from the Lord and I know that we can invite many that need a relationship with the Lord.  Thinking on those things and praying that nothing can distract or detain us from a wonderful time together 1 Corinthians 1.10 really spoke to me this morningI appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

Let's let nothing come in the way of God having His Way in us in the coming days.

Don't Blow Your Top

Today we read Job 31-32 and Galatians 5-6.

Job is going through a catastrophic hard time of which there is little that he understands.  He sits in the rubble and the ashes of the life he once knew and has 'friends' that come to guide him through.  I say 'friends' because of everyone that comes running to your side in your crisis is not your friend.  Some of them are just nosey.  Others that come are experts...or, at least, they think so....just ask them.
Elihu is late on the scene in Job's crisis and he has sat back and listened.  However, in Job 32.19, he apparently has had enough:
Behold, my belly is like wine that has no vent;
like new wineskins ready to burst.
20 I must speak, that I may find relief;
I must open my lips and answer.

He is so full of something to say...as well as being full of himself...that he is about the blow his top if he doesn't say it.  Too many of us get like that too much of the time.

It is wonderful to be a friend to someone in crisis, but check your motive at the door.  You are not there to find out the latest information to share nor simply for your own nosiness.  You are also not there to give your expert advice to someone who is going through something that you have never been through.  Even if you have been through it, you are not an expert on how other people will cope.  We all cope differently.  You are there to be a friend, to lend a helping hand, and to be used by God.

Go, when one is in need, but don't blow your top. You may not even need to open your mouth.  Be sensitive today to those in need as God gives you opportunity.

What Ails You

Today we read Job 30, Psalm 120, and Galatians 3 & 4.

Galatians 4.13-14- You know it wasbecause of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to youat first, 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus.

Sometimes God does His greatest works in us and through us during our ailments, struggles and difficulties.  Let nothing today stop you from being a vessel of the Lord.

He may just be up to something...actually He is....He is up to something...in you!

Have a great day!

How To Live

Today we read Job 28 & 29 and Galatians 1 & 2.

Dying to self is both a 'one time in life' decision as well as a daily decision.  Paul said in Galatians 2.20- I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Christian life begins by surrendering your life, your ways, and your wants to the Lord Jesus and asking for his forgiveness and Lordship in your life.  It is a one time event.  If it is real to start with, there is no need to do it again.  However, the surrendering of your ways and the 'dying to self' is also a daily decision.   We reap greater benefits in the Christian life when we give up on our ways and follow His.

Don't live for you today, live for HIm. Walk by faith, put yourself second (try to be third), and live for Him.

...And have a great one!

Breaking News

Today we read Job 26 & 27 and Mark 15 & 16.

Mark 16.6-7- And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”

The tomb is empty.  The Savior lives!  Live like it today....and, hey, go tell somebody about it.

It is still breaking news!

That Sick Realization

Today we read Job 25 and Mark 13 & 14.

Have you ever really messed up and then, almost as soon as you did, you remembered what your mother said...what the teacher had said...what the Lord had said about the matter?  That overwhelming sense of guilt and stupidity roll over you.  That is what Peter felt after he bluntly denied his association with Christ three times on the night that Jesus was arrested.  Notice how quickly he saw the light in Mark 14.72- And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

May we stay so faithfully close to Christ that we heed His Warnings every morning from His Word before we go about our day denying His Lordship in our lives.  When we do mess up, may we break down and wept and repent and change when we realize that we have sinned.

Go...and sin no more...today!  Hope to see you worship!

To Shine

Today we read Job 23 & 24 and Mark 11 & 12.

In the midst of his struggles, even when he could not sense the presence of the Lord, he still turned to the Lord.

Job 23.8-10Behold, I go forward, but he is not there, and backward, but I do not perceive him;
on the left hand when he is working, I do not behold him;  he turns to the right hand, but I do not see him. But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.

What he knew, we need to be reminded of.  No matter your circumstance, you are not alone, God is there.  Whether you sense His Presence or not, God is there and at work. God's Presence is not based on your feelings, but on His Promises. He is at work in your situation and He is at work in you.   He will lead you through and help you shine.

Look to Him today!

The Faith I Have

Today we read Psalm 121 and Mark 9-10.

Mark 9.24Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

Aren't you glad this morning that we don't have to have perfect faith for God to work in us?
We just have to take the faith we have and lay it before the Lord.

Give Him all you got today and watch your faith grow in response!

No Worries

Today we read Job 22 and Mark 7 & 8.

The alarm went off this morning and I hit the button to get a couple more 10 minute time slots.  While lying there, not really asleep and not really awake, I was thinking that my day was leaving me and I know I have a lot to do today.  In my delirious state I imagined that it was late in the day and I had not finished what I needed done today.  I started to worry because time was getting away from me.  When I woke up and 'got up' and realized that it was still early,  I was glad.  For me it seems that everything gets 'bigger' in the night than it is when the sun comes up.  We worry about stuff that we should not worry about.  The disciples did too.  Look at Mark 8.16-19And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.”

They knew better than to worry.  They had seen Him in action.  Why worry about that kind of thing?  Well, don't point a finger at them.  We do the same thing.  But let's decide today to not do it.  Let's not worry about things that we know God is always on top of....and what in the world is He not already on top of?

We'll have storms today in Mississippi, but we know Who is in charge, even in the storm.  The same goes for the storms in your life. No worries today.  Rest in Him...and be happy.

Change

Today we read Job 21 and Mark 5 & 6.

An interesting, somewhat fascinating thing happens in Mark 5 that reminded me of something that we need to be careful about.  The passage is when Jesus exorcized the demons out of the demoniac and sent the demons into nearby swine.   The pigs then ran off a cliff and died.  Some were amazed by his power but the owners of the pigs grew upset by the event.  Notice their response in Mark 5.17And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.

After a great moment of God, they just wanted God to leave.  When God moves, things change.  Some folks don't like the change.  Please realize that many times when things change, it is because God is on the move.  Let's be careful not to shun change or the God of change.  Pray through matters when you see things coming.  Even better, stay prayed up before it comes.  When our relationship with God is where it needs to be, we will be made more ready for His Movement in our lives, regardless of the change that may come through it.

Scattering Seed

Today we read Job 20 and Mark 3 & 4.

'Scattering seed' is an illustrative way that Christ described our sharing His Love with others and telling folks how to be forever changed by the power of salvation.  Notice how He describes the effect of our 'scattering seed' in Mark 4.26-27  -And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.

When we scatter seed, it will produce fruit that we did not anticipate and do not understand.  That is the power of God in the message of the Gospel.  Scatter the message today and let's see what pops up in our tomorrows...and in our eternity.

Share His Love today!

Keeping It All In Perspective

Today we read Job 19 and Mark 1 & 2.

After all Job had been through, he kept The Main Thing in perspective. Even when God moved in his life and he couldn't understand it, he never forgot The Main Thing. What is The Main Thing?
Job tells us in  Job 19. 25- For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.

Whatever you face, whatever questions you have, keep it all in perspective.  This is not all there is. The Lord is on the throne. He knows your circumstances. He is coming again. Jesus, my Redeemer, lives!

Keep it all in perspective today.

Just Keep Sharing

Today we read Job 18, Psalm 114, and Acts 27 & 28.

Let's be faithful to point people to Jesus and leave the results to the Lord.  Notice Paul's dedication to the Gospel and the results of his faithful sharing in Acts 28.23b-24 From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. 24 And some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved.

Share the Word faithfully.  Give folks the opportunity to respond.  Keep sharing regardless.  Leave the Results to God.

Popping the Question

Today we read Job 17 and Acts 24-26.

Paul stands before Agrippa and all his entourage and proclaims the Gospel.  It is not enough to share, you need to also ask one to come to Christ, if given the opportunity in the situation to lead to the spiritual question.   Paul asks Agrippa about coming to Christ and notice Agrippa's answer as well as Paul's response in Acts 26.28-29- And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?”29 And Paul said, “Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am—except for these chains.”

Whether we have to share with someone a long time or just one short conversation, let's share the hope of Jesus with a world that so desperately needs Him.

Come What May

Today we read Job 16 and Acts 21-23.

Paul was determined to do exactly what the Lord led Him to do, whatever the cost.  Read  Acts 21.10-14  - While we were staying for many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 And coming to us, he took Paul's belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘This is how the Jews[c] at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’” 12 When we heard this, we and the people there urged him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 And since he would not be persuaded, we ceased and said, “Let the will of the Lord be done.”

That, my friend, is a heart set on doing what God wants done in a life.  May we be so doggedly sure that God's Will is best for our lives that we follow Him, not matter where He leads.

Just do what God tells you to do today....nothing more and nothing less.  Have a great day following the Lord.

Staying On Course

Today we read Job 15 and Acts 19-20.

How is your service for The Lord?  Paul served the Lord at all costs.  He held nothing back.  Reading to words of his testimony will challenge your heart.  Just look at Acts 20.24-  But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

You are not finished yet!  Strive on for The Lord! Finish the Course!  Value Christ direction for your life more than your own opinions.  Live for Christ today!

Faith Conversations

Today we read Job 13-14 and Acts 17-18.

A man named Apollos is mentioned in Acts 18.  Notice how Priscilla and Aquila took him aside to teach him the rest of the story in Acts 18.26- He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

He spoke boldly of the truths of Scripture, but he did not know the Lord.  They sat him down and shared the complete Gospel message of salvation through Christ.

There are still a lot of people that know a lot about God but they do not know Him personally.  I want you to know about God, but more importantly I want you to know the Lord through a personal relationship that can only come by salvation through Christ.

I would love to come alongside you by appointment, phone call, email, snail mail, or any other way, if you have any doubt about your relationship with Christ.

It is not enough just to know about Him.  Know Him today!

The Right Way

Today we read Job 11-12 and Acts 15-16.

Everything did not always go smooth. Everyone did not always get along.  They did not always go where they had expected to go.  Notice, however, how Paul and the other followers of Christ determine the path that they will follow.

Acts 16.7-10- And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Folks, everything will not always go smooth.  Everyone will not always get along.  Life won't always take you where you expect to go, however, follow the Spirit of the Lord.  You will go the right way.
