The Inside Overflow

Today we read 2 Samuel 11 & 12, Psalm 51, and Matthew 23.

We read today about David and Bathsheba and the psalm is David's prayer of confession and repentance before the Lord after being confronted.  In our Matthew reading we read the seven woes that the Lord pronounced on the hypocritical, religious leaders.   They had their polity and behavior figured out.  The problem was not what they looked like.  The problem was who they really were inside.  Christ illustrates this in  Matthew 23.26- You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

We often worry about what other people think of us or what they see us doing or not doing.  Christ makes the point that if we will deal with our hearts and minds and get them right, the outside behavior and impressions will take care of themselves.  That is not to say that we should not strive to act decently.  It is to say that if our hearts and minds are right, it  will not be so hard.

Let's let God wash the inside of our cup today.  The overflow will cover the outside.
